Comparison of Venous and Capillary Blood Sample in Diagnosing Anemia in India.

Comparison of Venous and Capillary Blood Sample in Diagnosing Anemia in India.

Dr. Santosh Kumar (Associate Professor from University of Notre Dame) and Dr. Anna David (Assistant Professor from Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur)

This research project aims to compare two blood sampling methods—venous blood draw and capillary blood from finger pricks—to assess the accuracy of anemia diagnosis in India. The study will involve collecting and comparing hemoglobin levels using both methods to evaluate discrepancies. The project targets various age groups, including children, adolescents, and adult non-pregnant women, to improve anemia screening accuracy at the population level. The researchers hypothesize that anemia prevalence measured through venous samples will be lower than capillary samples, with variations based on age and gender.

The study will collect data from 1,300 participants across urban and rural areas in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. Participants will provide consent, and trained medical staff will conduct finger-prick tests to measure hemoglobin using the HemoCue HB 201 machine. The project aims to develop statistical adjustments to align the two methods, ensuring reliable anemia prevalence estimates in field settings.
